Steam boiler feedwater needs to be tested for oil in water. In this article, we will discuss in depth whether steam boiler feed water needs to be tested for oil in water, and explain the reasons behind and the importance of it.

Ⅰ.the importance of steam boiler feed water quality

Steam boiler feed water quality directly affects the boiler scaling, corrosion and steam quality. Good water quality management can reduce internal boiler deposits, prevent scaling of the heating surface, extend the service life of the boiler, while improving thermal efficiency and reducing energy consumption. Therefore, the steam boiler feed water on a regular basis, comprehensive water quality testing is an important measure to ensure the safe operation of the boiler.

Ⅱ.the source and impact of oil in the water

2.1 The source of oil

The source of oil in steam boiler feed water has two main aspects: First, the raw water itself may contain a certain amount of oil, especially when using groundwater or insufficiently treated industrial water; Second, the boiler system internal leaks, such as fuel oil system, lubricating oil system leaks, resulting in oil into the feed water system.

2.2 Effects of oil

The presence of oil in the water on the steam boiler is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

Foam generation: oil can reduce the surface tension of water, so that the boiler water in the heating process is easy to produce foam. Foam will cover the heated surface of the boiler, hindering heat transfer, reducing thermal efficiency.

Scale formation: oil under the high temperature is easy to form scale or carbonaceous scale, these scales attached to the heating surface of the boiler, will further reduce thermal efficiency, and may cause safety accidents.

Ⅲ.why the need to test the oil in the water?

In view of the many adverse effects of oil in the water on the steam boiler, regular testing of oil content in the feed water is particularly important. Through testing, oil can be found in a timely manner to exceed the standard, and take appropriate measures to deal with, such as strengthening the raw water pretreatment, repair leaks, etc., to ensure that the oil content of the boiler feed water within a reasonable range.

Ⅳ.the detection of oil in water

At present, the main methods for detecting oil in water are as follows:

Visual inspection method: by observing the colour of the water sample, transparency and other preliminary determination of the presence of oil, but the precision is low.

Infrared spectrophotometry: quantitative analysis using the oil absorption characteristics of infrared light, with high accuracy and sensitivity.

Ultraviolet fluorescence method: quantitative detection through the fluorescence emitted by the oil in the ultraviolet light irradiation, applicable to the analysis of trace oil.

In practical application, the appropriate detection method should be selected according to specific needs and laboratory conditions.

ERUN-ST3-J4 Laboratory Benchtop Infrared Spectrophotometer is an instrument for analysing the oil content in liquid samples. The benchtop oil in water tester is based on infrared spectroscopy, using different wavelengths of infrared light to interact with the oil molecules in the sample, the laboratory infrared spectrophotometer determines the oil content by measuring the intensity of the light absorbed or scattered by the sample. It is widely used to determine the content of oil, petroleum, animal and plant oils in water.

Through regular testing and corresponding treatment measures, it can ensure that the oil content of steam boiler feed water is within a reasonable range, thus guaranteeing the efficient and safe operation of the boiler. Therefore, in the steam boiler feed water quality management, the detection of oil in water should be regarded as an indispensable and important link.
